Professor Emerita of History, Bridget Brereton is renowned for her research on the social history of the Caribbean; the history of Trinidad and Tobago; Caribbean historiography; women and gender in the Caribbean; and public history in the Caribbean. She holds a PhD in History from The UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad, a MA in history from the University of Toronto and a BA from The UWI, Mona, Jamaica. Prof. Brereton has held key posts at The UWI, St. Augustine where she lectured since 1973. Ultimately, she served as the Deputy Principal and Interim Campus Principal at the St. Augustine campus. She has been a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and she is the first woman to win the University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for Research, Teaching, and Administration in 1996.
A preeminent academic, Prof. Brereton had published extensively, her books include the History of Modern Trinidad, 1783-1962; Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad, 1870-1900; and Law, Justice and Empire: The Colonial Career of John Gorrie, 1829-1892. She is the editor of the 5th volume of The UNESCO History of the Caribbean: The Caribbean in the Twentieth Century; and From Imperial College to University of the West Indies: A History of the St. Augustine Campus. Prof. Brereton has co-edited the following books: The Colonial Caribbean in Transition; Caribbean Heritage, a three-volume series of reprints of classic Trinidad novels and Horizons:The Life and Times of Edric Connor. She has also published the school texts, An Introduction to the History of T&T and for the Caribbean Examinations Council – Social Life in the Caribbean, 1838-1938, additionally she is the author of numerous scholarly articles.
Within the ambit of professional service, Prof. Brereton currently serves on The Regional Eminent Persons Selection Panel of The Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence and as a member of the Committee to Develop a Refereed Foundation Textbook on the History of T&T. While during the period 1994-1997 Prof. Brereton served as President of the prestigious Association of Caribbean Historians. As Professor Emerita of History at The UWI, St. Augustine, Prof. Brereton continues to research and publish.
